Yellow Turban Rebellion

Years: 184 - 204

The Yellow Turban Rebellion, sometimes also translated as the Yellow Scarves Rebellion, is a 184 peasant rebellion against Emperor Lingdi of the Han Dynasty of China.

It is named for the color of the scarves which the rebels wear around their heads.

The rebels are associated with secret Taiping Taoist societies and the rebellion marks an important point in the history of Taoism.

The rebellion is the opening event in the Chinese literary classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

“Let us study things that are no more. It is necessary to know them, if only to avoid them. The counterfeits of the past assume false names, and gladly call themselves the future. Let us inform ourselves of the trap. Let us be on our guard. The past has a visage, superstition, and a mask, hypocrisy. Let us denounce the visage and let us tear off the mask."

― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (1862)
