Union cavalry under Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan is detached from the Army of the Potomac to conduct a raid on Richmond, Virginia, and challenge legendary Confederate cavalry commander Maj. Gen. J.E.B.

The Confederate force is outnumbered and outgunned; Stuart is mortally wounded while attempting to rally his men, and dies the next day.
