Winchelsea, Battle of

The naval Battle of Les Espagnols sur Mer ("the Spaniards on the Sea"), or the Battle of Winchelsea, takes place on August 29, 1350, and is a victory for an English fleet of fifty ships commanded by Edward III, with the Black Prince, over a Castilian fleet of forty ships commanded by Don Carlos de la Cerda.
Between fourteen and twenty-six Castilian ships are captured, and some are sunk, while two English vessels are sunk and many suffer heavy losses.
