Wilhelminer War

Years: 882 - 884

The Wilhelminer War is a minor war fought in the March of Pannonia (later Austria) from 882 to 884.

It is initially a rebellion of the sons of the margraves William II and Engelschalk I, led by Engelschalk II, against the new margrave Aribo.

Svatopluk I of Great Moravia intervenes as an ally of Aribo because he had been at war with William and Engelschalk when the two died in 871.

The "Wilhelminers" are the descendants of William I, father of the two late margraves.

"History should be taught as the rise of civilization, and not as the history of this nation or that. It should be taught from the point of view of mankind as a whole, and not with undue emphasis on one's own country. Children should learn that every country has committed crimes and that most crimes were blunders. They should learn how mass hysteria can drive a whole nation into folly and into persecution of the few who are not swept away by the prevailing madness."

—Bertrand Russell, On Education (1926)
