The Western Sahara War is the armed conflict which sees the Sahrawi rebel Polisario Front battling Spain, Morocco and Mauritania for the independence of the former Spanish colony of Western Sahara (Rio de Oro) from 1973 to 1991.

The war first results with the Spanish retreat in 1975, the Mauritanian retreat in 1979 and a cease fire agreement with Morocco.

The territory remains under Moroccan occupation.
