Velbazhd, Battle of

The Battle of Velbazhd is a battle that takes place between Bulgarian and Serbian armies on July 28, 1330, near the town of Velbazhd (present day Kyustendil).The growing power of the Serbian Kingdom from the late thirteenth century raised serious concerns in Bulgaria.

The bulk of the Bulgarian and Serbian armies clash at Velbazhd and the Bulgarians are caught by surprise.

The Serbian victory shapes the balance of power in Balkans for the next two decades.

The Bulgarians do not lose territory after the battle but are unable to stop the Serbian advance towards Macedonia.

Serbia manages to conquer Macedonia and parts of Thessaly and Epirus to reach its greatest territorial extent.

Their new King Stefan Dušanwill be crowned Emperor with Bulgarian help in 1346.However, after Dušan's death in 1355 his Empire will disintegrats, as will Bulgaria after the death of Ivan Alexander in 1371.

Both states will subsequently be destroyed by the Ottoman Turks.
