Tolbiac, Battle of

Years: 506 - 506

The Battle of Tolbiac is fought between the Franks, who are fighting under Clovis I, and the Alamanni, whose leader is not known.

The date of the battle has traditionally been given as 496, though other accounts suggest it may have been fought in 506.

The site of "Tolbiac", or "Tulpiacum", is usually given as Zülpich, North Rhine-Westphalia, about 60 km east of what is now the German-Belgian frontier.

The Franks are successful at Tolbiac and establish their dominance over the Alamanni.

"Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past...Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered."

― George Orwell, 1984 (1948)
