Talikota, Battle of

Years: 1565 - 1565

The Battle of Talikota (January 26, 1565) is a watershed battle fought between the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire and the Islamic Deccan sultanates.

It ends in the defeat of Vijayanagara.

The battle takes place at Talikota, today a town in northern Karnataka, about 80 kilometers (fifty miles) to the southeast from the city of Bijapur.

The defeat of Vijayanagara Empire, followed by subsequent destruction and looting, ends a period of Deccan Hindu rule and extends the reach of Muslim rule deeper into Southern India.

“And in the absence of facts, myth rushes in, the kudzu of history.”
