Swedish Crusade, Third

Years: 1293 - 1293

The Third Swedish Crusade is a Swedish military expedition to Karelia in 1293, an area controlled by Novgorod.

As the result of the attack, Vyborg Castle is established and western Karelia remains under Swedish rule for over 400 years. The name of the expedition is largely unhistorical, and it is merely a part of a long series of military conflicts in the Swedish-Novgorodian Wars.

“That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history has to teach.”

― Aldous Huxley, in Collected Essays (1959)
