Snow Campaign

Years: 1775 - 1775

The Snow Campaign is the one of the first major military operations of the American Revolutionary War in the southern colonies.

An army of up to 3,000 Patriot militia under Colonel Richard Richardson marches against Loyalist recruiting centers in South Carolina, flushing them out and frustrating attempts by the Loyalists to organize.

The Patriot expedition becomes known as the Snow Campaign due to heavy snowfall in the later stages of the campaign.

“Let us study things that are no more. It is necessary to know them, if only to avoid them. The counterfeits of the past assume false names, and gladly call themselves the future. Let us inform ourselves of the trap. Let us be on our guard. The past has a visage, superstition, and a mask, hypocrisy. Let us denounce the visage and let us tear off the mask."

― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (1862)
