Servile War, First (Slave War in Sicily, First)

Years: 135BCE - 132BCE

The Servile Wars are a series of three slave revolts ("servile" is derived from "servus", Latin for "slave") in the late Roman Republic.

The First Servile War, waged from of 135–132 BCE, is an unsuccessful slave uprising against the Romans on the island of Sicily, in Enna.

It is led by Eunus, a former slave claiming to be a prophet, and a Cilician "Cleon", his military general.

After some minor battles won by the slaves, a larger Roman army arrives in Sicily and defeats the rebels.

"He who does not know how to give himself an account of three thousand years may remain in the dark, inexperienced, and live from day to day."

― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, West-Eastern Divan
