Roosebeke, Battle of

Years: 1382 - 1382

The Battle of Roosebeke (sometimes referred to as the Battle of Westrozebeke) takes place on November 27, 1382 on the Goudberg (golden mountain) between a Flemish army under Philip van Artevelde and a French army under Louis II of Flanders, who had called upon the help of the French king Charles VI after he had suffered a defeat during the Battle of Beverhoutsveld.

The Flemish army is defeated, Philip van Artevelde is slain and his corpse put on display.

"Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe... Yet, clumsily or smoothly, the world, it seems, progresses and will progress."

― H.G. Wells, The Outline of History, Vol 2 (1920)
