Quiberon Bay, Battle of

Years: 1759 - 1759

The naval Battle of Quiberon Bay takes place on 20 November 1759 during the Seven Years' War in Quiberon Bay, off the coast of France near St. Nazaire.

The British Admiral Sir Edward Hawke, with 24 ships of the line, catches up with a French fleet with 21 ships of the line under Marshal de Conflans and, after hard fighting, sinks, captures, or forces aground six of them and disperses the rest, giving the Royal Navy one of its greatest victories, as part of the Annus Mirabilis of 1759.

In French, it is known as Bataille des Cardinaux.

“Let us study things that are no more. It is necessary to know them, if only to avoid them. The counterfeits of the past assume false names, and gladly call themselves the future. Let us inform ourselves of the trap. Let us be on our guard. The past has a visage, superstition, and a mask, hypocrisy. Let us denounce the visage and let us tear off the mask."

― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (1862)
