Under Afonso V (1443–1481), surnamed the African, the Gulf of Guinea is explored as far as Cape St Catherine (Cabo Santa Catarina),and three expeditions (1458, 1461 and 1471) are sent to Morocco; in 1471 Arzila and Tangier Are captured from the Moors.
