Niså, Battle of

Years: 1062 - 1062

The Battle of Niså is a naval battle fought on August 9, 1062 between the forces of the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada and the Danish king Sweyn Estridsson.

Harald has claimed the Danish throne since 1047, and has launched raids into Denmark ever since.

With his invasion in 1062, he wants to decisively defeat the Danes, and thus finally be able to conquer Denmark.

The battle is won clearly by the Norwegians, but since many Danes manage to escape, including Sweyn, it proves indecisive in Harald's attempt to conquer Denmark.

“History is important. If you don't know history it is as if you were born yesterday. And if you were born yesterday, anybody up there in a position of power can tell you anything, and you have no way of checking up on it.”

—Howard Zinn, You Can't Be Neutral ... (2004)
