Morgarten, Battle of

Years: 1315 - 1315

The Battle of Morgarten occurs on 15 November 1315, when a fifteen hundred-strong force from the Swiss Confederacy ambushes a group of Austrian soldiers of the Holy Roman Empire on the shores of Lake Ägeri near the Morgarten Pass in Switzerland.

The Swiss, led by Werner Stauffacher, defeat the Austrians, who are under the command of Duke Leopold I.

The Swiss victory consolidates the Everlasting League of the Three Forest Cantons, which forms the core of modern Switzerland.

“The lack of a sense of history is the damnation of the modern world.”

― Robert Penn Warren, quoted by Chris Maser (1999)
