Mandatory Palestine, 1947-1948 Civil War in

Years: 1947 - 1948

The 1947-1948 Civil War in Mandatory Palestine breaks out after the General Assembly of the United Nations adopts a resolution on November 29, 1947, recommending the adoption of the Partition Plan for Palestine.,to May 14, 1948, with the termination of the British Mandate itself.

This period constitutes the first phase of the 1948 Palestine war, during which the Jewish and Arab communities of Palestine clash, while the British, who supposedly have the obligation to maintain order, organize their withdrawal and intervene only on an occasional basis.

The next phase of the conflict is the 1948 Arab-Israeli War which begins on May 15, 1948, on the termination of the British Mandate of Palestine and the creation of the State of Israel, when the conflict in Palestine becomes an outright war between the new State of Israel and its Arab neighbors.

"[the character] Professor Johnston often said that if you didn't know history, you didn't know anything. You were a leaf that didn't know it was part of a tree."

― Michael Crichton, Timeline (November 1999)
