Lincoln, Battle of

Years: 1217 - 1217

The Second Battle of Lincoln occurs at Lincoln Castle on May 20, 1217, during the First Barons' War, between the forces of the future Louis VIII of France and those of King Henry III of England.

Louis' forces are attacked by a relief force under the command of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke.

The Comte du Perche, commanding the French troops, is killed and this heavy defeat leads to Louis being expelled from his base in the southeast of England.

This event is known as “Lincoln Fair” after the looting that takes place afterwards.

As the citizens are loyal to Louis, Henry’s forces sack the city.

“What experience and history teach is that nations and governments have never learned anything from history."

―Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Lectures (1803)
