Lazic War

Years: 539 - 562

The Lazic War or Colchic War, also known as the Great War of Egrisi in Georgian historiography, is fought between the Byzantine Empire and Sassanid Persia for control of the region of Lazica (in present-day western Georgia).

The Lazic War lasts for twenty years, from 541 to 562, with varying success and ends in a relative victory for the Byzantines, who keep their control of the country.

The Lazic War is narrated in detail in the works of Procopius of Caesarea and Agathias. The Lazic War is intertwined with Khosrau's war with Justinian, inasmuch as there are many battles which overlap each other, yet they are generally considered different wars.

Whereas Khosrau's wars with Justinian are fought for the sake of fighting Romans, the Lazic War is often fought on behalf of Lazic and Armenian citizens, or in defense of Sassanian outposts in Lazica.
