Henry VII's First Invasion of Brittany

Years: 1488 - 1488

The 1488 Battle of Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier is the decisive conflict of the Mad War (guerre folle) between rebellious feudal aristocrats and the French king.

The rebels seek to resist the concentration of power in Paris and retain regional feudal independence.

The Bretons have sought support from various rebel lords and opponents of expanding French power.

Alain d'Albret, a rebel lord, believing he will marry Anne of Brittanty, has reinforced the Breton army with five] thoiusand troops supplied by the king of Spain.

Maximilian I of Austria also sends fifteen hundred men.

Henry VII of England is also approached for support, but refuses to send troops and instead attempts to negotiate a deal with the French to stop the invasion.

However the English knight Edward Woodville, Lord Scales, defies Henry and brings over a small force of seven hundred archers he had gathered from his base in the Isle of Wight.

The Bretons decide to create the impression that Henry had changed his mind and had sent a large force of longbowmen, dressing thirteen hundred of their own men in the English cross of St George and adding them to Lord Scales' troops to create a vanguard of two thousand men.

The combined rebel forces are defeated, paving the way for the creation of a unified French state.
