Genpei War (Taira-Minamoto War)

Years: 1180 - 1185

The Genpei Wars, a conflict between the Taira and Minamoto clans and in late-Heian period Japan, result in the fall of the Taira clan and establishment of the Kamakura shogunate under Minamoto Yoritomo in 1192.The name "Genpei" (pronounced and sometimes romanized as Gempei) comes from alternate readings of the kanji 'Minamoto' and 'Taira'.

The conflict is also known in Japanese as the Jisho-Juei War), after the two eras between which it takes place. It begins with Minamoto support for a different candidate to take the throne, in conflict with the Taira's nomination.

The ensuing Battle of Uji takes place just outside Kyoto, starting a five-year long war, and concludes with a decisive Minamoto victory in the naval Battle of Dan-no-ura.

“The longer you can look back, the farther you can look forward...This is not a philosophical or political argument—any oculist will tell you this is true. The wider the span, the longer the continuity, the greater is the sense of duty in individual men and women, each contributing their brief life's work to the preservation..."

― Winston S. Churchill, Speech (March 2, 1944)
