Eight Saints, War of the

The War of the Eight Saints is s a war between Pope Gregory XI and a coalition of Italian city-states led by Florence, which contributes to the end of the Avignon Papacy.
In the early 1370s, Florence opposes the expansion of the Papal States in central Italy (which the Avignon Popes have set as a condition for their return to Rome).
From 1375 to 1378, Pope Gregory XI, who harbors various grievances against the Florentines for their refusal to directly aid him in his war against the Visconti of Milan, battles a coalition of Italian city-states led by Florence in the War of the Eight Saints, which contributes to the end of the Avignon Papacy.
