Crusade, Ninth
Years: 1271 - 1272
The Ninth Crusade, which is sometimes grouped with the Eighth Crusade, is commonly considered to be the last major medieval Crusade to the Holy Land.
The failure of Louis IX of France to capture Tunis in the Eighth Crusade leads Prince Edward of England to sail to Acre in what is known as the Ninth Crusade.
The Ninth Crusade fails largely because the Crusading spirit is nearly "extinct," and because of the growing power of the Mamluks in Egypt.
It also foreshadows the imminent collapse of the last remaining crusader strongholds along the Mediterranean coast.
