Croatian and Slovenian peasant revolt

Years: 1573 - 1573

The Croatian-Slovenian peasant revolt of 1573 is a large peasant revolt in today's Croatia and Slovenia.

The revolt, sparked by cruel treatment of serfs by the baron Franjo Tahy, ends after twelve days with the defeat of the rebels and bloody retribution by the nobility.

"Remember that the people you are following didn’t know the end of their own story. So they were going forward day by day, pushed and jostled by circumstances, doing the best they could, but walking in the dark, essentially."

—Hilary Mantel, AP interview (2009)
