The fourth cholera pandemic of the nineteenth century begins in the Ganges Delta of the Bengal region and travelswith Muslim pilgrims to Mecca.
In its first year, the epidemic claims thirty thousand of ninety thousand pilgrims.
Cholera spreads throughout the Middle East and is carried to Russia, Europe, Africa and North America, in each case spreading via travelers from port cities and along inland waterways.
