Chinese Rebellion & Reaction 1852-63

Years: 1852 - 1863

The most important of the several rebellions that rock imperial China in the laer 19th century is the communistic uprising and subsquent civil war known as the Tai-Ping Rebellion, which begins in 1850 and lasts until 1865.

Nearly parallel to this event is the Nien Rebellion that begins in 1853 and is not suppressed by the authorities until 1868.

The Muslim Rebellions in Yunnan and in Shensi and Kansu compound the problems of the Manchu government, which finally crushes the last of the Muslim rebellions in 1881.

This thread is a "super-thread," a combination of the separate treads that treat the Tai-Ping, Nien, and Muslim rebellions in China

“Let us study things that are no more. It is necessary to know them, if only to avoid them. The counterfeits of the past assume false names, and gladly call themselves the future. Let us inform ourselves of the trap. Let us be on our guard. The past has a visage, superstition, and a mask, hypocrisy. Let us denounce the visage and let us tear off the mask."

― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (1862)
