Cervera, Battle of

Years: 1000 - 1000

The Battle of Cervera took place near Espinosa de Cervera on July 29, 1000 between the Christian troops of counts Sancho García of Castile and García Gómez of Saldaña and the Muslim Caliphate of Córdoba under the hajib Almanzor.

The battle, "tremendous and difficult to describe", is a victory for Almanzor.

(The words are Ibn al-Khatib's, quoted in Martínez Díez, Gonzalo.

2005.

El condado de Castilla, 711–1038: La historia frente a la leyenda.

Marcial Pons Historia., 566: "En fin, fue una batalla tremenda y difícil de describir.")

The battle is listed as the fifty-second of Almanzor's career in the Dikr bilad al-Andalus.

"History never repeats itself, but the Kaleidoscopic combinations of the pictured present often seem to be constructed out of the broken fragments of antique legends."

― Mark Twain, The Gilded Age (1874)
