Cartier's explorations of North America
Years: 1534 - 1543
Jacques Cartier, in three voyages to North America, discovers and claims Canada for France.
He is the first to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River, which he names "The Country of Canada(s)", as is so called in both of the large Iroquoian settlements he sees in Stadaconna (present Quebec City) and in Hochelaga (Montreal Island).
