Carlist War, Second
Years: 1846 - 1849
The Second Carlist War, or the War of the Matiners or Madrugadores (Catalan and Spanish for "early-risers," so-called from the harassing action that took place at the earliest hours of the morning), is a short civil war fought primarily in Catalonia by the Carlists under General Ramón Cabrera against the forces of the government of Isabella II.
The uprising begins in September 1846 and continues until May 1849, spreading to Galicia. The Second Carlist War is a minor Catalonian uprising.
The rebels try to install Carlos VI on the throne.
In Galicia, the uprising is on a smaller scale and is put down by General Ramón María Narváez.
Theoretically, the war is fought to facilitate the marriage of Isabella with the Carlist pretender, Carlos, Count of Montemolín, which is supported by the moderate party and by the Carlists.
The marriage never takes place, as Isabella is eventually wed to Francis of Assisa and Bourbon.
