The Cantonal Revolution is a cantonalist uprising that takes place during the First Spanish Republic, starting on July 12 of 1873 in Cartagena.

In the following days, it spreads through many regions including, Valencia, Andalusia (especially Granada), Cartagena (which endures for several months the besieging army of Nicolás Salmerón) and in the provinces of Salamanca and Ávila, all of them in places that come to articulate cantonalism.

It can also be noted that the attempt to establish cantons takes place in Extremadura, Coria, Herve and Plasencia.

Pi y Margall, seeing that cantons declare independence because of the tardiness of the taxation of improvements, resigns from his post; he is succeeded by Salmerón.
