Calton weavers strike

Years: 1787 - 1787

The Calton weavers strike of 1787 is the earliest major industrial dispute in Scottish history, when troops fire on demonstrators, killing six.

The Calton weavers become Scotland's first working-class martyrs.

Ultimately the strike contributes to a workers' movement that achieves fundamental changes in the relationship between workforce and employers.

"Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe... Yet, clumsily or smoothly, the world, it seems, progresses and will progress."

― H.G. Wells, The Outline of History, Vol 2 (1920)
