Arab Revolt

Years: 1916 - 1918

The Arab Revolt (1916–1918) is initiated by the Sherif Hussein ibn Ali with the aim of securing independence from the ruling Ottoman Turks and creating a single unified Arab state spanning from Aleppo in Syria to Aden in Yemen.Though the Sherifian revolt has tended to be regarded as a revolt rooted in a secular Arab nationalist sentiment, in June 1916, the Sherif does not present it in these terms; rather, he accuses the Young Turks of violating the sacred tenets of Islam and calls Arab Muslims to sacred rebellion against the ostensibly "impious" Ottoman government.

"Remember that the people you are following didn’t know the end of their own story. So they were going forward day by day, pushed and jostled by circumstances, doing the best they could, but walking in the dark, essentially."

—Hilary Mantel, AP interview (2009)
