Anglo-Spanish War (1762–1763)

Years: 1762 - 1763

The Anglo–Spanish War (Spanish: Guerra Anglo-Española) is a military conflict fought between Britain and Spain as part of the Seven Years' War.

It lasts from January 1762 until February 1763 when the Treaty of Paris brings it to an end.

In anticipation of the Spanish entering the war on the side with France, the British attack Spanish colonies.

In August 1762 a British expedition against Cuba takes Havana and western Cuba, then a month later the British seize Manila.

With the loss of both the capitals of the Spanish West Indies and the Spanish East Indies this represents a blow to Spanish prestige.

Between May and November three major Franco-Spanish invasions of Portugal are defeated and they are forced to withdraw with heavy losses inflicted by the Portuguese with British assistance.

By the Treaty of Paris (1763) Spain hands over Florida and Minorca to Britain and returns territories in Portugal and Brazil to Portugal in exchange for British withdrawal from Cuba.

As compensation for their ally's losses, the French cede Louisiana to Spain by the Treaty of Fontainebleau (1762).

“History isn't about dates and places and wars. It's about the people who fill the spaces between them.”
