Anglo-Mysore War, First
Years: 1767 - 1769
The Anglo-Mysore Wars are a series of wars fought in India over the last three decades of the eighteenth-century between the Kingdom of Mysore and the British East-India Company, represented chiefly by the Madras Presidency.
The fourth war resulta in the overthrow of the house of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan (who is killed in the final war, in 1799), and the dismantlement of Mysore to the benefit of its pro-British allies.Hyder Ali, ruler of Mysore, had begun to occupy the serious attention of the British government in Calcutta.
In 1766 the British enter into an agreement with the Nizam of Hyderbad to equip him with troops to be used against the common threat.
Shortly after this alliance is formed a secret arrangement is made between the two Indian powers, and Colonel Smith's small force was met with a united army of 50 000 men and 100 guns in what becomes known as the First Anglo-Mysore War.
