Amistad Mutiny

Years: 1839 - 1839

La Amistad (Spanish: "Friendship"), a 19th-century two-masted schooner of about 120 feet built in the United States, was originally named Friendship but was renamed after being purchased by a Spaniard.

La Amistad becomes a symbol in the movement to abolish slavery after a group of African captives aboard revolts in July 1839.

Its recapture results in a legal battle over their status.

"Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe... Yet, clumsily or smoothly, the world, it seems, progresses and will progress."

― H.G. Wells, The Outline of History, Vol 2 (1920)
