Aliyah, Fourth
Years: 1924 - 1929
Between 1924 and 1929, when immigration quotas keep Jews out of the United States, 82,000 Jews arrive in Palestine, many as a result of anti-Jewish sentiments in Poland and Hungary.
This group contains many middle class families that move to the growing towns, establishing small businesses and light industry.
Of these, approximately 23,000 leave the country in what is referred to as Yerida, ("descent"), the opposite action, Jewish emigration from Eretz Israel.
