Alexandria, Siege of

Years: 640 - 641

The major Mediterranean port of Alexandria, the capital of the province of Egypt, is permanently seized from the (Eastern Roman, or) Byzantine Empire by forces of the Rashidun Caliphate in the middle of the 7th Century.

This marks the end of Eastern Roman maritime power over, and financial dominance of,the eastern Mediterranean and thus brings about a decisive geopolitical shift.

"[the character] Professor Johnston often said that if you didn't know history, you didn't know anything. You were a leaf that didn't know it was part of a tree."
