Acre, Siege of

Years: 1291 - 1291

The Siege of Acre (also called the Fall of Acre) takes place in 1291 and results in the loss of the Crusader-controlled city of Acre to the Muslims.

It is considered one of the most important battles of the time period.

Although the crusading movement continues for several more centuries, the capture of the city marks the end of further crusades to the Levant.

When Acre falls, the Crusaders lose their last major stronghold of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem.

They still maintain a fortress at the northern city of Tartus, engaged in some coastal raids, and attempt an incursion from the tiny island of Ruad, but when they lose this as well in 1302/1303 in the Siege of Ruad, the Crusaders no longer control any of the Holy Land.

"Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe... Yet, clumsily or smoothly, the world, it seems, progresses and will progress."
