Acre, Siege of

Years: 1189 - 1191

The Siege of Acre is one of the first confrontations of the Third Crusade, lasting from August 28, 1189 until July 12, 1191, and the first time in history that the King of Jerusalem is compelled to personally see to the defense of the Holy Land.

It is also the deadliest event of the whole period of the Crusades for the Christian ruling class of the east.

"Remember that the people you are following didn’t know the end of their own story. So they were going forward day by day, pushed and jostled by circumstances, doing the best they could, but walking in the dark, essentially."

—Hilary Mantel, AP interview (2009)
