1592–93 Malta plague epidemic
Years: 1592 - 1593
The 1592–93 Malta plague epidemic is a major outbreak of plague (Maltese: pesta) on the island of Malta, ruled by the Order of St John.
It occurs in three waves between June 1592 and September 1593, and it results in approximately three thousand deaths, which amounts to about eleven percent of the population.
The disease is imported to Malta by Tuscan galleys that had captured vessels from Alexandria.
In 1593, the Order requests assistance from Sicily to deal with the epidemic, and the measures taken are effective in containing plague.
