Zhang Rang

court eunuch of the Han dynasty
Years: 140 - 189

Zhang Rang (dies 189) is a eunuch of the late Han Dynasty who serves Emperor Ling of Han; he is also the leader of the Ten regular attendants (Also known as the Ten Eunuchs), a group of court eunuchs who hold great influence in the Han imperial court.

Such is Zhang Rang's power that the emperor refer to him as 'foster father' and allows him control of most matters in court.

The people and the officials, including the regents He Jin, Yuan Shao and Cao Cao, all agree that Zhang Rang's power is too great.

After Emperor Ling dies and is succeeded by his son Liu Bian in 189, these individuals invade the capital for the purpose of defeating the Ten Attendants, leading to He Jin's beheading in the palace courtyard by the Ten Attendants.

Zhang kidnaps the emperor and his brother, the future Emperor Xian.

However, Zhang is soon surrounded by enemy soldiers and so jumps in a nearby river and drowns himself.
