Toghon Temür
emperor of the Yuan dynasty
Years: 1320 - 1370
Toghon Temür (May 25, 1320 – May 23, 1370), also known by the temple name Huizong bestowed by the Post-Imperial Mongolia and by the posthumous name Shundi bestowed by the Hongwu Emperor of the Ming dynasty, is a son of Khutughtu Khan Kusala who rules as emperor of the Yuan dynasty.
He is also considered the last Khagan of the Mongol Empire, although it is only nominal due to the division of the empire at the start of the Yuan dynasty.
Emperor Huizong is a Buddhist student of the Karmapas (heads of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism) and is considered a previous incarnation of the Tai Situpas.
He also notably invites the Jonang savant Dölpopa Shérab Gyeltsen to teach him, but is rebuffed.
During the last years of his reign, the Yuan is overthrown by the Red Turban Rebellion, which establishes the Ming dynasty, although the Mongols remain in control of Mongolia.
