Societies and Political Developments

• Mongol conquest and the Golden Horde (Jochid ulus):

  • The Mongol campaigns (1237–1240) dismantled the Kievan Rus’ commonwealth. Principalities survived under Horde suzerainty—paying tribute (yasak), hosting basqaq agents, and using the Horde courier system (yam).
