Somesvara I

Western Chalukya king
Years: 1010 - 1068

Somesvara I (Ahavamalla or Trilokamalla) (r. 1042–1068) succeeds his father Jayasimha II as the Western Chalukya king.

He is one of the famous kings of the later Chalukya Dynasty.

In spite of many reverses he manages to safeguard the integrity of the Chalukya kingdom.

He founds the city of Kalyani, present day Basavakalyana in modern Bidar district and moves his kingdom to that location.

He has great faith in himself and manages to impart that to his many generals and feudatories.

He patronizes the Kannada scholar Shridharacharya who writes Jatakatilaka, a work on astrology, and Chandraprabhacharite, a Jain purana.

One of his queens is Hoysala Devi, a princess from the feudatory Hoysala ruling family.
