Rurik or Riurik (meaning "famous ruler"; ca 830 – ca 879) is a Varangian chieftain who gains control of Ladoga in 862, builds the Holmgard settlement near Novgorod, and founds the Rurik Dynasty, which rules Russia until the 17th century.
