Philippa of Champagne

Lady of Ramerupt and de Vénisy
Years: 1197 - 1250

Philippa of Champagne, Lady of Ramerupt and of Venizy (c. 1197 – December20, 1250) is the third daughter of Queen Isabella I of Jerusalem and Henry II, Count of Champagne.

She is the wife of Erard de Brienne-Ramerupt, who encourages her in 1216 to claim the county of Champagne which belongs to her cousin Theobald IV, who is still a minor.

This provokes the conflict with Theobald's mother, the Regent, Blanche of Navarre, which erupts into open warfare, and comes to be known as the Champagne War of Succession.

Blanche's son Theobald, who has the support of King Philip II of France, Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, and Eudes III of Burgundy, eventually emerges the victor.

Philippa renounces her claim in April 1222, but Theobald is constrained to pay Erard and Philippa a large monetary settlement for his rights to the county.

Together, Erard and Philippa have seven daughters and two sons.
