Pedro I of Brazil
founder and first ruler of the Empire of Brazil
Years: 1798 - 1834
Dom Pedro I (English: Peter I, 12 October 1798 – 24 September 1834), nicknamed "the Liberator",[1] was the founder and first ruler of the Empire of Brazil.
As King Dom Pedro IV, he reigns briefly over Portugal, where he becomes known as "the Soldier King".
Born in Lisbon, he was the fourth child of King Dom João VI (John VI) of Portugal and Queen Carlota Joaquina and thus a member of the House of Braganza.
When their country is invaded by French troops in 1808, Pedro I and his family flee to Portugal's largest and wealthiest colony, Brazil.
Neglected by his parents, he grows up without restraints.
