Novatian

scholar, priest, theologian and antipope
Years: 200 - 258

Novatian (circa 200–58) is a scholar, priest, theologian and antipope who holds the title between 251 and 258.

According to Greek authors, pope Damasus I and Prudentius gave his name as Novatus.

He is a noted theologian and writer, the first Roman theologian who uses the Latin language, at a time when there is much debate about how to deal with Christians who have lapsed and wish to return, and the issue of penance.

Consecrated as pope by three bishops in 251, he adoptsa more rigorous position than the established Pope Cornelius.

Novatian is shortly afterwards excommunicated: the schismatic church which he establishes persisted for several centuries.

Novatian flees during a period of persecutions, and may have been a martyr.
