Mikołaj Zebrzydowski

Polish aristocrat and diplomat

Mikołaj Zebrzydowski (1553–1620), voivode of Lublin from 1589, Grand Crown Marshal 1596–1600, voivode of Kraków from 1601.

An early supporter of King Sigismund III Vasa (during the interregnum), he becomes dissatisfied with the king’s attempts to strengthen royal power and weaken the nobility (szlachta).

In 1606, he organizes a legal rebellion - the rokosz of Zebrzydowski.

Defeated in 1607, he sponsors the creation of the city of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska.

Born in 1553 in Kraków, from 1560 to 1569, he attends a Jesuit college at Braniewo.

He takes part in the wars of Stefan Batory against Moscow, following Chancellor Jan Zamoyski.

He has excellent contact with the Vatican; later, after the defeat of his rokosz, he retires to a monastery.
