Michael VIII Palaiologos or Palaeologus (1223 – 11 December 1282) reigns as Byzantine Emperor 1259–1282.
Michael VIII is the founder of the Palaiologan dynasty that will rule the Byzantine Empire until the Fall of Constantinople in 1453.
He recovers Constantinople from the Latin Empire in 1261 and transforms the Empire of Nicaea into a restored Byzantine Empire.
